Happy Columbus Day!

Oh Columbus Day….

The day where we honor the famous Italian explorer Christopher Columbus for his discovery of the New World. His contribution to history is undoubtedly important, for this event eventually led to the meeting of 2 different civilizations which would alter the very foundations of life, politics, and the economy everywhere before they knew it.

Every first Monday of October schools and other institutions celebrate Columbus Day with various events such as showing dramatic movies over the occasion, creating arts and crafts of the 3 ships Columbus used to navigate through the Atlantic Ocean (I still remember the jingle one of my elementary school teachers gave me. La Nina, la Pinta, y la Santa Maria. Good times they were. I was so innocent.), and giving holidays to workers and students. For the students who don’t go to class because of this day, they feel ecstatic. Heck, my little sister who goes to high school didn’t go to class today because of the holiday.

Even though all this celebration is good-natured and harmless on its surface, it still doesn’t take away the cataclysmic ramifications the historic event made to all the indigenous people involved. Sure, the discovery of the Americas by the Europeans wasn’t by itself a bad thing, but everything that happened after it is appalling to say the least.

The subsequent genocide of the natives through deadly pandemics which would make way for the foreign visitors to become the new rulers of the former’s land, the coercing of Christianity to the affected people against their will, and the extractive economic system that squeezed all of the Americas’ juices from its fruits.

All of these are irreversible actions the colonizers did that made them very rich and prominent at the expense of the enslaved population.

This cycle of harm began with the Spanish, which was one of the major reasons why they became so powerful as an empire from the 16th to 19th centuries. Its neighbors—Britain, France, Portugal, etc.--, looking at the prospects of their own self-interests should they dive in this venture of expansion and colonialism, were salivating for their own share of the big tasty American pie. And so, the discovery of the Americas by Columbus indirectly led to the colonization of said world.

Even though the major European powers later left those lands alone for good, the effects of maintaining such a volatile society for a long time is still felt today. In Venezuela, Africa, and Southeast Asia, there is rampant social unrest that can be traced back to when the people inhabiting those areas all those years ago were harshly oppressed. The leaders, after the period of independence that swept those regions in the late 19th and mid-20th centuries which created new countries at a single time, didn’t care for making policies that could’ve helped the newly-formed nations look after themselves. They only cared for their own wealth. It’s as simple as that.

Furthermore, if you look more closely into the effects of colonialism, you can see that the native people’s preceding culture was destroyed by the European iteration, which is ultimately what we’re familiar with today. Think about it. Before the U.S. became the Thirteen British Colonies, the land was filled with dark-colored Native Americans. Who knows what would’ve happened had Columbus not sought out to explore the west of the Atlantic for exotic spices.

The same can be said with Central America. My parents are from Mexico where they lived a life of poverty during their youth. They had to go through the hard way to find their own footing in order to move forward and be self-sufficient. They didn’t ask for this. They were born into it without any choice. You know what was the foundation for this poverty in countries like Mexico? That’s right. It was the Spanish Conquistadors who looted and massacred their way to power.

I understand Columbus had nothing to do with what happened after his discovery, but when you’re thinking about his holiday, you can’t help but include the effects that event made also. More and more people are sharing this sentiment. Columbus, Ohio, the namesake of the very occasion, just announced it’s not going to celebrate the holiday. Elsewhere, other cities are celebrating military veterans and Native Americans instead of the Genoese explorer. This atmosphere is only getting bigger as the years continue to go by.

Whether you celebrate Columbus Day or not is up to you, reader, but know that if you do, you’ll have the brunt of all the innocent people that died after the famous event on the back of your mind.

So yeah…

Happy Columbus Day!!! May you have a fun and worry-free holiday!

Why?: Wearing a Sweater in a Hot Sunny Day

People who go out on hot days wearing their jackets, why do you do it?

What prompted you to further torture yourself with immense heat coming from not just the sun, but from yourself as well?

Is it because you wanted to stand out from the crowd and be known as a rebel?

Was it because you have always been a fan of hot weather and not the cold? Was it because you really like sweaters?

Or perhaps it was because you did it to lose weight through excess sweating?

I was in my university walking to my classes today and I saw scores of people wearing dark-colored sweaters outside. OUTSIDE. Here I was suffering in this heat as always and there they were walking as if there's not a single thing wrong going on in their minds. I was just baffled. Some even had their hoods on their heads while in the face of the blazing sunlight. As they passed my sweat-dribbling self, all I could think of was how crazy they were to do such a stupid stunt. No one needs to be Evel Knievel in the middle of September.

Speaking of which, why is it so FUCKING HOT in SEPTEMBER? Fall should be signaling its return by now with breezes and not-so-hot weather, but no, summer just had to stay put like an annoying little ass. God damn climate change, man.

Sweaters are made for two things: for workouts and for the retention of body heat during the winter. That's it. There's no need for anyone to be an edgelord by wearing it during the summer. Seriously, people die out of fighting the heat with their host of clothing after a given period of time. Hell, look at Chris from Everybody Hates Chris. You know that show, right? There was one time in an episode where he bought a leather jacket to impress a girl in his neighborhood (screw you, Keisha) and wore it in front of her outside on a bright sunny day. Do you know what happens next? You don't? Well then, let me give you the answer.

Don't die.

If you feel warm outside, simply take off your sweater. No one's going to tease you if you do. Consider this as a public service announcement, reader. Don't wear your sweater outside on a hot sunny day.

Viva El Futbol. Viva Guerrero. Viva Guanajuato. Viva Mexico.

Here I am again.

After going through 4 more years of my life, I am about to embark on another journey with my beloved Mexican national futbol (futbol, football, soccer--whatever you want to call it, it’s that) team in another FIFA World Cup tournament. The last match we played in this competition ended in utter heartbreak as we were knocked out by a resilient Netherlands squad who banked in 2 last-minute goals, one of which spawned the ever-familiar #NoEraPenal trend in social media. No era penal chingada madre. Lo llevo esto hasta mi cama de muerte.

When the game ended, I remember sitting upright in a butterfly-like position on the floor in disbelief over what I had just seen on the TV screen. As I was still trying to digest everything in a calm demeanor, I tried to eat my post-game food on the table situated near the kitchen in my house. As I took my first bite of the food, I couldn’t contain my sad emotions piling up in my heart. As such, I preceded to cry. I wondered to God why he did what he did and gave the Dutch the victory. Fast forward a few hours of that day and I was still devastated over the result. It was so bad that when my dad asked me about what happened in my room I cried again in front of him while mumbling unintelligible words in an attempt to explain the whole ordeal. Nevertheless, when all was said and done and I calmed down a bit, I swore to him that we would be back and better than ever in 4 years’ time.

Well, here I am now. Those 4 years have passed and I’m starting to feel the pre-game World Cup jitters that I’ve been familiar with for the past 3 occasions (‘06-’14; I didn’t count 98’ & ’02 because I was too young to understand how big the tournament actually is). Though this is normally a good thing for any soccer fan to experience, I don’t feel at ease in comparison. For starters, we’re starting our tournament in Russia against Germany, the reigning world champions and 4-time winners of the tournament. And second, the belief in my national team’s coach (J.C. Osorio) is not entirely positive and wholesome.

Criticism towards his rotational deployments in each game has been rampant throughout his tenure. This has been amplified thanks to the team’s international disappointments in the past 2 summers. In 2016, Mexico lost to Chile in the Copa America Centenario quarterfinals via a massacre (SEVEN TO ZERO). The next year, they lost to Jamaica in the CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinals and fell to Germany—their B team, no less--in a blowout as well, losing 4-1 in the FIFA Confederations Cup semifinals.

Additionally, his selection towards certain players despite them having no form whatsoever prior to big games have brought questions over their effectiveness in said games (I’m looking straight at you, Gio dos Santos.). Despite all of this, we qualified for the World Cup in a comfortable fashion, finishing first in the final “hexagonal” round of the CONCACAF region, thereby easing tensions between the coach and the fans for just a moment.

With more than 2 years under his belt as the coach of Mexico, he has prepared his team for this moment, the moment of playing against the best in the World Cup. In the face of all the negative stuff thrown at the entire team prior to the opening kick-off, I stand by them ready to celebrate or suffer through their actions on the field.

I am a fan that has gone through thick and thin with my country. I sat back distraught as I saw Maxi Rodriguez score the goal of his life for Argentina to eliminate us in the 2006 World Cup. I was consoled by my dad as I saw that same Argentina team dismantle us 3-1 in the 2010 World Cup. I sat on my chair speechless as I counted down the seconds toward our supposed impending elimination against Costa Rica in 2014 World Cup qualification phase. The many FUCKING “dos a cero” chants that came my country’s way via the United States over the years until our victory against them on Veterans’ Day of 2016.

I’ve been through it all, which means disappointment and sadness are nothing new to me. Like every opening game of a tournament, the hopes of victory and delirium ring around every fan towards their selected nation. Unfortunately, such hopes cannot be given to everyone. For every instance of joy and relief in soccer, there is also one of defeat and anguish. I don’t want to be on the latter side of that particular see-saw. I don’t think anyone does, to be honest. That’s why I will support my country to make sure that that doesn’t happen again. For today and the next 2 games in the group stage, win.

Win, mi querido Seleccion Mexicana.

Viva Mexico. A ganar guey. Es ahora o nunca.

Me vs Boredom 10

*written at approximately 1:36 PM on the 10th of April 2018

Oh shit, this series has returned?

What the fuck!?

What is going on here? Is this real life?

Don't be so shocked, reader, for the "Me vs Boredom" series has risen from the ashes like a phoenix to re-document my intransigent struggle with my own gloomy conscience. Now then, what the hell am I doing right now?

Well, my one class finished for the day and I'm simply biding my time in the computer lab doing my school/homework. I also spoke to my mother and learned that everything is going well on her side of life. Just to let you know, she's on vacation, so learning that she's having a swell time over there gives me a piece of mind. I'm happy in general today. Nevermind the tiring amount of shit I have to complete by the end of the week. All is well and dandy.

How about you, reader? Are you having a good day? I hope you are, whoever you may be. If it's your birthday today, then allow me to greet you with a happy birthday. May your life be blessed with good fortune for its entire duration.

Wow! What a wholesome entry this turned out to be if I do say so myself!

16 Is Indeed Greater Than 1

From Grant Halverson (NCAA Photos via Getty Images)

Wow.

One day has passed, and I still can't believe that it happened.

As of right now, I'm still trying to keep my head in check from all of the madness that transpired last night.

Allow me to fill you in on what happened more than 24 hours ago.

The University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC), ranked #16 in the South region of the 2018 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament and 63rd overall out of the 64 participating teams, defeated the number 1 overall seeded team the University of Virginia to move on to the next round of the competition. Before this result, no team, I repeat, NO TEAM has ever defeated a number 1 seeded team as a 16 seed. It never happened.

Since the introduction of the 64 team tournament format in 1985, a total of 135 teams came and tried to defeat their vastly superior opponents. Unfortunately for all of them, they were vanquished.

Some came close to pulling it off.

Princeton lost in 1989 against Georgetown by the score of 49-50.

Murray State lost in overtime the next year against Michigan State by the score of 71-75.

And Southern lost in 2013 against Gonzaga by the score of 58-64.

The crowd of people who watched each of those games back then had hope that somehow, some way, their unlikely underdog would do the impossible and break the laws of basketball as they knew it. However, reality quickly set by the beginning of the second half and the number 1 teams restored formality through the sheer weight of their talent, athleticism, and excellent coaching.

It's kind of like one of those action movies where the good guy clobbered all of the obstacles placed before him and finally meets the final boss for his final battle. The only difference between that and these games are the villains pulling something out of their ass to win at the last minute and walking away unscathed. In the end, we'd drown out cries of sadness and sympathy for the valiant competitors who tried to slay the dragon and root them on to try again next year. This kind of thing recycles itself year after year after year after year.....

These expected victories by the 1 seeded team has gone on for so long that us fans have come accept the fact in which the possibility of a 16-seeded team winning in the first round may never happen. They could try all they want, but the story will play itself out just like all that have come before. The script of that action movie will never be rewritten.

That is how it has been..................until last night.

Less than a couple of hours before the UMBC vs UVA game ended, the #16 Texas Southern vs #1 Xavier game was finishing up. The Musketeers cruised throughout the second half in halting the Tigers' offense, eventually winning it 102-83. However, at the beginning of the game, they fell victim to a tremendous [10-something]-0 run conducted by the Tigers which spanned for nearly 3 minutes. During that run, I was fucking psyched. As a student of TSU, I held a sliver of hope for my team to defy the odds and break the seemingly unbeatable streak. But alas, it was not to be, for they were expectedly handled by the much bigger and better Xavier team.

As the clock winded down to triple zeroes, I checked my phone to see the current scores of all the games that were going on at the same time. I was trying to figure out which game I wanted to see next. I scrolled down and examined the screen...

*Sees #3 Michigan State vs #14 Bucknell*

"Meh. The Spartans are taking care of the Bison, so I won't watch that."

*Sees #11 Syracuse vs #6 TCU*

"It's happening on CBS but I don't feel like watching that right now. I'll catch up to it later since I don't need to look for a streaming site to see it."

*Sees #16 UMBC vs #1 Virginia*

"Hmm. They're both tied 21-21 at halftime. Maybe this will be the night. What the hell! I'll try this one out."

So trying it out I did. I clicked on a link from an illegal streaming site and I watched everything unravel live, and it was glorious.

Led by Jairus Lyles (Human Torch), who scored 28 points, and K.J. Maura, a cataclysmic ball of energy, the UMBC Chesapeake Bay Retrievers shocked the basketball world in dispatching the heavily-favored Cavaliers with the final score being 74-54.

Prior to this, the Cavaliers lost only 2 other games this season. Those came at the hands of West Virginia (61-68 on 12-5-2017) and Virginia Tech (60-61 in OT on 2-10-2018). Other than that, they were perfect throughout. They ended up winning their conference tournament, beating the likes of Clemson, Louisville, and the defending national champion in North Carolina. How did this come to be!?

Well, the Retrievers caught on fire in the second half, shooting 7/12 from beyond the arc and scoring a total of 53(!) points against a Virginia team who hadn't allowed anyone in the season to score at or over 70 in a game. UMBC was playing their best game ever, while Virginia was playing their worst. So many things had to go right for the underdog to triumph and it did.

The stamina, the shooting, the defense, the coaching. Everything went to the Retrievers' favor.

Virginia looked shocked late into the game as they couldn't believe they were being blown out in the first round to a team who previously lost to Albany 83-39 in a conference game just 2 months ago!

I couldn't believe it too! I was freaking out in front of my family who was wondering how a demon could possess someone with likes of me late at night. I was screaming "This can't be happening!" every minute. I did this while also keeping in mind all of the false hope I had from the TSU game just a while ago. I knew what this story was all about, so I kept expecting for Virginia to come back and steal this game away at the last minute.

5 minutes pass....it didn't happen.

5 minutes pass again....it didn't happen yet.

5 minutes pass again....they're getting manhandled this time.

When the game had 2 minutes left, I finally let out all of my pent-up emotions. The basketball gods have finally smiled down at the #16 seed. And when the final buzzer sounded, the cries of thousands of people with utterly busted brackets could be heard a mile away from my house. Shock had transcended across many walks of life to take notice of this surprising result.

You can say whatever you want about this massive achievement. You can say how this result was a long time coming in whatever analysis you did. You can mount up and present to me many excuses in figuring out why this happened the way it did. You can even say that we're in an alternate timeline where the game hadn't happened yet and we're just dreaming our desired result. Hell, I probably might've believed you if we were living in that scenario.

But we're living in this timeline; and in it, UMBC defeated Virginia soundly and justly.

This may never happen again, I believe. So many things have to go right again, just like this game did, for another 16-seeded team to pull off another magical upset. It is because of this that I'll never forget. Years may come and pass, but I'll keep in mind the emotions I unleashed at the sounding of the final buzzer and the confirmation of the UMBC players about what they just did on that night.

UMBC's next game in the tournament is on the 18th of March, as they face #9 Kansas State, who was just as shocked as the rest of the country after their opponents pulled off the upset to end all upsets.

Who knows what's going to happen to the Retrievers in the second round, but one thing is for sure. They are forever enshrined in the halls of March Madness lore.

Let's Talk About: True and False News

From the Science Magazine website

You see them everywhere, reader.

You know what I’m talking about. Don't deny yourself. It's there and you know it. I'm talking about those arguments that spread around like wildfire which deals with heavily scrutinized issues in today's world. Those juicy headlines that claim something but really don't. The constant discerning of misinformation that you do from websites you've never heard of while roaming on social media.

They all depict false news.

Information deemed as untrue has been on the rise recently in ubiquitous media platforms, thus paving the way for ambiguous news sources to step out into the limelight and garner followers at their will. As such, the publishing of such articles can be regarded as a fertile ground for deep virality, which stands for the potential for any kind of material to spread rapidly in a short amount of time.

I see them all the time as well. Alleged rumors of true important events come out en masse to portray a specific political agenda or conspiracy just for the sake of seeking attention. The sort of tabloid headlines you normally see in gossip magazines is reflected in comparison to standard journalism.

Politics, natural disasters, tragedies, sports, science, business….

Pregnancies, couples forming, announcements of projects, the knowing of famous celebrities’ personal lives….

They're all the same in the sense of providing news and heavy scrutiny.

With such magnitude of attention hovering around the news sources, it should then be no surprise to see groups or individuals in the outer part of the coverage realm provide “ground-breaking” information over their area of expertise.

For every singular thing that is true, there is another that is untrue. It's sort of like good and evil. With that in mind, I thought to myself, "How is it that false news is able to spread so quickly to the point where I can see them every single day?" It was mind-boggling for me to comprehend. Fortunately for me, a technologically-proficient trio of professors thought the same way.

I happened to come across this particular study from the Science Magazine website and--let’s just say it was pretty interesting. It talked about the general spreading of both true and false news in social media, most specifically on Twitter. It was conducted by Soroush Vosoughi, Deb Roy, & Sinan Aral to see if there was any difference in how fast and deep true and false news both spread. How did they compare to each other? Were they both the same in essence? If there was a difference, what causes them? Which one spread the quickest? Which one spread to the most people? What they concluded from their research was that "false news was more novel than true news, which suggests that people were more likely to share novel information," meaning the former spread more quickly and vastly than the latter.

Huh.

Well fuck my sideburns and call me daddy. Color me shocked. Not really. I kind of expected this to be the case. To understand how this came to be, let me first give the definition of the word "novelty".

novelty
/nävəltē/
noun
Definition: the quality of being new, original, or unusual.

The key word to look out for here is "unusual". For something to be called a novelty, it has to be one that is not normal. It has to be brand new, unfamiliar, strange, and unusual. Think of it like this, reader. When you see something strange in public, you can't help but lock your eyes on it. It's like when you're walking down the sidewalk and you suddenly see a turtle riding a unicycle with one leg on the street. It's absurd, but you can't help but glare at it. It's a spectacle. It has swallowed your attention, regardless of whether it is rational or not. Performances can gravitate a plentiful amount of people towards them at one time. The same can be said about the news. What we do as the observing audience in response to the things we see or read is up to our own discretion, but there's no denying that we won't sit down and keep everything to ourselves. Pent-up emotions as a result of reading such news can come out through our expression of opinions in replies on the matter.

It is because of this dynamic that the researchers took it into account for their study. According to their paper, feelings of fear, disgust, and surprise were mostly shown in replies of people who responded to novel false news. Conversely, in true news, feelings of sadness, anticipation, and trust were expressed in the replies of people who read them.

Those assessed feelings in response to both true and false news are those that I resonate with wholeheartedly. I say this because I've experienced them firsthand. On one side, reading about true events such as school shootings, natural disasters, political events (elections, bill passings, and so on) and the like are all things that made me feel melancholic of the world around me. It reminds me of the troubles we deal with every day as a society. On the other side, I expressed a few instances of fear, disgust, and surprise throughout my life after reading somewhat false events/claims. For example, when I was younger, I heard murmurs of the world ending thanks to the supposed December 21, 2012 doomsday phenomena and I was scared because of it. It got me so paranoid at one point that in times where I slept I couldn’t do so because I was thinking of the destruction that may or may not happen in the future. Other times, when I surfed Facebook in my timeline, I felt shocked and disgusted after seeing the ludicrous attempts of disingenuous scammers whose tricks would persuade users into believing their baseless conspiracies.

"You will not believe what happened in 2001 after Obama worked with the Al'Qaeda to bring down the World Trade Center!!!!!"

Sure. Ok. Yeah right.

While I’m on the subject, let me just say to those people that you’re not “woke”. You’re stupid, and you should feel bad for being so stupid.

I'm positive I'm not the only one who has thought this way. I'm glad that I'm able to recognize which article is true and which is not. You probably have this capability as well, reader.

However, not everyone is going to react the same way as you did to false news. Even though you know that what you're reading or seeing is indisputably incorrect, others will joyously embrace it and label it as fact. Additionally, those people will call true news "fake news" since it may not be up to par in their narrative, whatever that may be.  Such shouting from them can only call for trouble, as the political climate in our country today has sadly turned into a highly-volatile boxing ring that serves as the centerpiece for verbal slugfests. If you haven't seen scenes like this before, allow me to direct you to the Twitter of United States President Donald Trump. Click on any of his tweets, and you will see nothing but fighting by scores of people with conflicting views of the man who wrote them. Although communicating with this group of people may probably be toxic, there's absolutely no reason for everyone else to completely ignore them. They're the reason why false news has been spreading more quickly and vastly than true news by a fair margin.

Now you would think that the reason why this is happening is due to the number of followers the users who post them have and how often they engage with their social media audience. More followers equal more exposure; more exposure equals more likes & retweets; more likes & retweets equals rapid virality. That's normally how it's supposed to be, right?

Actually, no.

Instead of naming the users who have more followers and post novel false news often for their crowd to see as the consensus for its proliferation, the actual reason for the rise of such news is, according to the paper, the exact opposite. "Users who spread false news had significantly fewer followers, followed significantly fewer people, were significantly less active on Twitter, were verified significantly less often, and had been on Twitter for significantly less time." It was unbelievable when I read that part. “No way will I ever accept this!” is what I thought; but alas, I had to. Despite these unexpected circumstances, "falsehood diffused farther and faster than the truth despite these differences, not because of them."

One would never think that such people with scarce usage and a speck number of followers exist. They might be bots disguising themselves as people! Furthermore, they were likely created by foreign intelligence agencies with the aim to destabilize the trust the citizens have for their government! How evil of them! The researchers understood this possibility as well, so they implemented a supposed "bot-detection algorithm" to identify and remove all the bots that may interfere with the study. After all was said and done in the original iteration of the study, they then put the discovered bots back where they were to see if any change of their main conclusions occurred. In the end, it all stayed the same. This confirms, according to the professors, that it isn't bots who are responsible for the spreading of misinformation—it’s us humans.

People come out in droves left and right to send messages that fit within their ideologies. They may tell you that their side is just, correct, & viable and their opponents are absolute vile specimen who are friends of Satan. There's no avoiding it. On top of that, they send you untruthful, unrecognized publications with the mindset that you will undoubtedly sway over to their side, thus increasing their strength. It concerns me that people from whatever age will be persuaded to distrustful sources of false news.

What I ask of you, the reader, to do when you come across things like this is to not blindly accept anything you see at first glance. Don't trust your gut and instead search for proof to see if the person making those rumors is really just rambling hokum. This is for the sake of your own self-awareness towards current events. Don't blindly accept anything you come across on the computer/phone screen. By doing this, you can stop the spreading of false news. Your contribution may be minimal in scale, but it's what you do right then and there that serves as the foundation of preserving the credibility of true news that is expansive, fruitful, and obstinate.

The need for true news to spread extensively is evident now more than ever before. Journalists and their integrity have been put under fire by amoral proponents who abash their findings just to protect their own skin and personal benefits. They throw out phrases such as "cuck", “deplorable” and "fake news" towards their counterparts in a faint attempt to stigmatize the truth. They can do this at their behest, but it won't change what is correct. To lie is to run away from the truth. The truth should not be ignored in the slightest and it shouldn't be manipulated also. It is up to us to ensure that the spreading of false news is halted profusely. Anything else can mean the putrefying of respected journalism. Search for what is correct and don't believe in anything that is aloof and incorrect. Keep this study in mind when you go about your daily life and look through your phone. Chances are you'll eventually encounter what I just talked about in spades on this entry.

They are everywhere after all.

A Beautiful Day/Night

Finally...

Finally, after a week or so of coping with the damage Hurricane Harvey has inflicted on the city of Houston, we're experiencing a beautiful day/night. Oh how I've missed these days. The air is fresh, soothing, and cool. The sky is blue. No clouds can be seen beyond the horizon. The sun is shining but it's not irritating for the eyes to see. It is essentially a paragon of what everyone wishes an ideal day is supposed to be like. It's also a reminder for us saying that fall is coming.

As much as I love the season of summer and the perks it has, I'm going to be the first to say that I like autumn more. It's a prelude to the inevitable cold storm we're bound to face head-on in the future. To most people, they hate it; but to me, I utterly love it. The cold air blasting into my body as I go on my usual trek of school with my countless number of jackets and sweatpants gives me a blithely feeling that is second to none. It's situations like these that makes me happy to love the cold.

Please come already, winter. To the Game of Thrones fans who are wary of you, they will be frightened when you inevitably come to wreak havoc on the masses. Conversely, I'll embrace you with open arms. I feel like I've said this before.

Déjà vu...

That comes later though. I can take care of that later. This is the present, and right now, I'm living through a beautiful day/night.

That's all.

 A beautiful day/night.

I have no complaints of it whatsoever. I wish this day could last forever. However, it will eventually pass, just like Harvey passed, thanks to Father Time and the contingent nature of weather in which no meteorologist can correctly predict.

Oh well, at least I can wait for it to come back soon.

It'll happen. I don't know when, but it'll happen.

WORLD. CUP. QUALIFYING.

Oh "spit". It's that time again, reader.

I've been waiting all summer for this competition to come back to town. It's that time where almost every country in the world duke it out with each other to see who is worthy of qualifying for the single biggest international soccer competition around: the FIFA World Cup.

That's right. It's time for World Cup Qualifying matches.

I love this phase of the competition so much. It's so much better than the final tournament, in my opinion. It's like a gauntlet everyone has to go through--save for the host of the occasion--where nearly every competitor perishes in order to make room for the best of the best to truly contend for the great trophy that is the World Cup. Think of this as the "dress rehearsal" before the main performance, reader. There's no avoiding it. Even if you happen to be the defending champion this time, you still have to qualify in order to actually defend it. It has been that way since after 2002, when Brazil had to qualify for Germany 2006 after winning it all 4 years ago in South Korea and Japan.

There surely is no easy way to qualify. You either get in or you don't. It's that simple. If you don't qualify, you have to wait a whole cycle--or approximately 4 years-- to get another shot at making the tournament. If you do qualify, then congratulations! You now have a time limit of less than 8 months to decide on a perfect 23-man squad to take into battle with the goal of winning in mind. Like those that failed to qualify, you only get one shot to win, so if you get eliminated early on in the group stages, then tough luck. You're going to have to try again next time.

World Cup Qualifying can make way for complex and exciting storylines you couldn't see anywhere else. These are things you normally see in books or movies. Fortunately for us fans, you can see them too on the soccer field. A small fragment of a nation miraculously qualifying after defying numerous odds; a big nation failing or almost failing to qualify in epic fashion; a two or three-year long race consisting of many nations fighting for a small number of direct qualification spots.... The possibilities are endless. And you know another thing about these scenarios? They're happening right now in this very moment! Let's check it out:

  • War-torn Syria is unbelievably close to securing qualification to Russia 2018. Despite everything that has happened to them recently, they are sitting 3rd place in their group. If they beat Iran in Tehran and hope the results in Tashkent (Uzbekistan vs South Korea) go their way, they will qualify for the Cup for the first time ever.
  • Uganda is leading their African qualifying group consisting of themselves, notable powerhouse Egypt, notable powerhouse Ghana, and respectable Congo by a measly 1 point. If they hold on to their position after playing 3 more games they too will qualify for the first time in their history.
  • South America is blown wide open right now. Save for Brazil (qualified), Bolivia (eliminated), and Venezuela (eliminated), everyone else is fighting for their lives. Both 2nd place and 8th place are separated by just FIVE points. 3 direct spots and 1 intercontinental play-off spot are available so far. May the better team survive. GOOD LUCK.
  • In Europe, teams are vying for their qualification dreams as well. Countries such as Iceland, Northern Ireland, Serbia, Bulgaria, Wales, Austria, and much more are trying to qualify. Nobody is safe. Like in the last bulletin, may be the better team survive.

Continental rivalries get amplified in this phase too. Matches such as Mexico vs U.S.A., Argentina vs Brazil, England vs Scotland, France vs Netherlands, Wales vs Ireland, Greece vs Cyprus, and Japan vs Australia are played which strikes a certain degree of fervor that the fandom of either side will not experience anywhere else in any other time except for the day of kickoff. Memorable matches and moments are made in World Cup Qualifying. People get immortalized there. Great plays will be replayed over and over again long after the matches are finished for the future generations of players to bask in and get struck in amazement as they wonder how it ever happened in the first place.

Tonight, I will be rooting for my side/country, Mexico, to secure their direct qualification to the 2018 FIFA World Cup by defeating Panama in the famed fortress named the Estadio Azteca. It'll be an opportunity for me put the dumpster fire that was Mexico's 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifying campaign behind my back. Trust me when I tell you, reader, that those matches in the last round of CONCACAF qualifying were plain bad. We were so bad we were almost eliminated at the last minute of our last match in Costa Rica. Ironically enough, our American rivals saved our asses thereafter by scoring the 2 most important goals in our history in quick succession. Finally, this grueling past will dissipate if we win tonight.

It's storylines like this that makes me happy to be a soccer fan. I love World Cup Qualifying. Let the madness begin again!

A Trip Back to Memory Lane.....Again

* written at approximately 7:00 P.M. today

This is my third time doing this walking thing. The weather outside is nice again. I'm currently sitting on a bench in the shade in a park whilst writing on my little blue notebook. The calm breeze slowly blowing past me feels as relaxing as when you're laying down on a grassy plain and looking up at a blue sky on a beautiful day. It's great right now.

It has been a long time--and I do mean a LONG time--since I came back to this place. The last time I came here was, I don't know, maybe, a decade ago? Everything from back then is vastly different from what this park is right now. The old playground on the far right corner of the park is still there. The color painted on the structure hasn't changed, I see. I guess it hasn't deteriorated after all this time. Most of the seats and tables that were in the park are now gone. There's only, like, three tables and one long bench laying down by its side in these premises. Hey, I'm sitting on that bench!

Some soccer goals are set up in the park's big field, which is next to the playground, so I guess that's nice for those fanatics living in this neighborhood to have fun playing their great sport (Quick fact: I love soccer too! This is just an FYI, reader.). As I write, there's a game going on in front of me in which twenty to twenty-five people are playing together; and within this group, the fat players are either positioned at the back of their teams' formations as the center backs or standing near the goals as the goalies. Man, that stuff never changes. Oh, and by the way, one of the fat players appears to be pretty talkative since I can hear him 30 yards away from where I'm sitting at. I think the noise is based on him talking shit to his friends? Well, I don't know. I'll leave that as it is.

The basketball court is still there to no surprise. Ball will never lie. Ball will never die also. The swings, slides, and monkey bars are still there. There are no kids here today so I don't think anyone is going to use them. I don't think I'm going to use them also. I know my age, reader. I'd never go to that place again. Trust me. I've grown.

All of this reminiscing has been great, but I think I now want to move on instead of always looking back to my past. If I keep doing this any while longer I'll probably come to a standstill. I don't want that. Constant stagnation brings no favorable results. Perhaps I should tone down on these kinds of entries and write about other stuff. Yeah, I should do that. Look forward to that, reader.

And as Such, the New Generation of Students Arrive to My Former School

*written at approximately 6:30 P.M. today in my high school cafeteria

Here I am in the cafeteria for my little sister's high school orientation basking in the always-familiar smell of my past life within these confines. All I see before me are little kids looking a little anxious about what high school has in store for them. This would be their first time being in my high school, I believe, so it would be safe to assume they're pretty nervous about going here. Surely, I felt the same way when I was in their shoes 4 years ago.

I didn't know what to expect of high school either in the leadup to my first day of sophomore year (I went to two high schools: a 9th grade school & a senior high school). I wondered whether it was going to match my expectations. As a kid, way before I went there, I developed somewhat of an image of what it was supposed to be like, more thanks in large part to the multitude of T.V. shows/movies that I watched. In those programs, high school was presented as a "cool and hip" place to go to. One of them was a movie called "High School Musical".

sigh

I thought dancing maniacally on the tables of the classroom and cafeteria was normal. I also thought making friends was going to be a piece of cake. These shows painted a utopian-like image of the high school life everyone of us in the real world dream of. "Yeah! High school is going to be a blast once I get there!" is what I thought.

Oh, how wrong I was......

As a matter of fact, it wasn't a blast.

I mean, it was fine and all, but it was underwhelming. It didn't fulfill my presumptive expectations, to say the least.

Now that my class graduated 2 years ago (Class of 2015 represent!!) from high school, we've made way for the next bunch of students to complete their 4 years in the same fashion, thus bringing in newer faces.

This generational change is already evident in my little sister's orientation. Seeing this happen makes me feel very old, even though I'm at the current age of 20. For a school, it's just any other day in its year-long routine of curriculum; for me, however, it's anything but. It's a reminder of how I'm really just a spoke on a wheel-- the dynamic wheel of generations--that never stops moving. Nothing's ever going to force it to stop. It's infinitely moving but there's no destination in sight. Once this current crop of students graduate in the future, the group behind them will only repeat the same path. Wash, rinse, repeat.

It'll never stop, but it is what it is. I guess I just have to deal with it.

Love's Sorrow

Such an interesting title.
Such an interesting song.
Such an interesting sound.
How it must be for a musician to play this song.

Does he feel a certain way when he plays it?
Does it reach him in any way?
Does it reach its listeners also?
Does it only convey an emotion that resembles sadness?
Or does it make more than just that?

I'm curious.
I want to know.
Please tell me the answer, Kreisler.
Did it reach you when you wrote this song?
I wonder how it must have been for you.

I Just Cried.....

.....after watching episode number thirteen of "Your Lie in April". This may very well be the first time I've ever cried to an anime show. It's surreal for me to come to terms with this possible fact.

This episode was beautiful, touching, and filled, fittingly, with sorrow. The protagonist, Kōsei Arima, played the piano in front of a crowd in an exhibition gala (or concert). The song he played was "Liebesleid (Love's Sorrow in German)" by one Fritz Kreisler, a famous violinist and composer, and it was done as a way for him to properly say goodbye to his mother who passed away 2 years ago from a severe illness. During his playing sequence, it was revealed that this song was Kōsei's lullaby from when he was a kid.

His performance was exhilarating to watch. He started off filled with anger because prior to walking out onto the stage, a little kid said some things to him backstage in the last episode that riled him up. Fortunately for him, he recovered when he remembered the way his mother played the said piece all those years ago to him in their heartfelt time of joy before she became sick. It's these memories that pushed him forward in changing his originally anger-driven playing style and ultimately finishing the song.

Amidst his playing, he was triumphantly exonerated from his inner demons that came out of his suffering at the hands of his mother, who, at the last couple of years of her life, used up all of her remaining strength to mold and perfect Kōsei's skills as a pianist, even though it was seen by those around them to be draconian. Although they were indeed cruel, his mother did these things because it was, in her mind, the only thing she could do for her son. She wanted to make sure her teachings would have an everlasting effect on him as a musician.

And, in the end, they did.

Then, after he finished playing the piano and walked off the stage, that same little kid from backstage did his turn of playing--on the violin, not the piano, mind you--, but was at first scared of following up the former's masterful-like performance. And just then, as he was thinking about giving up, he saw his own mother, who was squeezing her hands within the crowd praying for her son's success. This sight reminded him of Kōsei's performance and how it was charged by the thoughts of his loved ones. This inspired the kid to play a way that's similar to Arima, which is soft and full of hope for the song to reach the people he wants to reach, like his mother.

sigh

These moments from the thirteenth episode of "Your Lie in April" made me teary-eyed because it reminded me of how much I love my own mother who is alive and in good health. As if I didn't need any more reminders, I was once again taught by the show to cherish the moments I have right now with not just my mom, but with both of my parents. They'll be gone eventually, but they'll be inside of my heart for as long as I live, just like Kōsei having his mom in his heart.

Thanks for telling me this, "Your Lie in April". You might not be half-bad after all.

Me vs Splashtown

*written at approximately 1:00 P.M. today on my notebook

Welp, here I am, reader, in Splashtown with my family having the time of my life. It is unsurprisingly hot, I'm watching people get wet (don't think wrong), and I'm writing down what I'm thinking in this little notebook that I have under my possession. I don't know what time it is right now because I didn't bring my phone for this period of supposed fun. A breeze of cool wind just hit me and it felt great. This is probably going to be the only time I'm ever going to be here this year, so I guess it is best for me to put my pencil and down and relax in the water park. I need it. That's right. I should just soak this in. I'm not going to experience anything quite like this ever again at a unique day like the 6th of August of 2017, so I should make the most of it. Here's to fun!

1 hour and 30 minutes later

This has gone to shit now.

The sky became cloudy while I was having fun with the family and the lifeguards of the park, thinking the weather was going to get worse at a moment's notice, stopped all of its operation.

Great.

Just fucking great. I can't get even this time peacefully. There always has to be an interruption from somewhere or something whose sole purpose of existence is to fucking fuck me over. Fucking clouds. Fuck you. It never ends. Oh well, it can't be helped, I guess. In addition to that, I don't have my phone in which I can use to pass the time. Maybe not taking it with me was a mistake. However, I do have this notebook. Perhaps, this day won't be wasted, after all. Let's see what happens in the future of this day together, reader.

30 minutes later, I think

The suspension is over! People are now entering the rides. I can now get wet again (don't)! Patience does pay off in the end! Rejoice!

1 or 2 hours later probably

Fun. Happiness. Fun time. Bliss.

30 minutes later

NEVER.

FUCKING.

MIND.

The bad weather has appeared again and the lifeguards are taking their precautions again by stopping the water park AGAIN (I understand why they're doing this since it's part of their protocol but fuck). Everyone is leaving the water again, myself included. Fun time is over again.

bleh (less than 1 hour later)

We've given up. We've decided to change back to our normal clothes and leave the park. Well, it was fun while it lasted, Splashtown. You were awesome. I went to that Texas Tornado thing or whatever and it was scary. The speed took me by surprise and I hung on for my dear life when it was blitzing to the sides of the funnel/tornado. I thought I was going to fall off of the big yellow floatie I was riding on. I kept screaming "OHSHITOHSHITOHSHIT" until it ended. It was fun, though, so it didn't matter in the end.

Despite everything that happened today with the stoppages and all, my family and I had fun. And if we had fun, then the day was not wasted. My legs hurt, but I don't feel any pain. That's because I used them for the enjoyment of my loved ones.

Financial Aid: A Blessing, but Also a Bitch

Today I went to the university I go to for a checkup on my financial aid. Everything went smoothly. My account was updated enough to include the new money that was given to me in the form of a couple of grants. I think the amount revolved around $5,500 in total for the school year, which is great. Now I only need to wait for one more scholarship to come into my account for me to be fully set for class. And with that being said, I can finally relax until the fated first day of the new year. I feel good, very good to be in fact. I wonder how the rest of my class are preparing for their school year. They must be doing the same preparations as me, right? I think so. This is part of the routine we students do in our quest of attaining the highly sought-after college degree.

It’s no easy task getting that degree, that’s for sure. However, with less than two years remaining in my college career, I have been thinking about what it will be like for me after I graduate from college. Some new obstacles will have to be tackled such as housing, employment, food, and transportation. You know what I mean when I say these things, reader. These are necessities adults have to fulfill for themselves, and soon enough, I’ll act like one of tem too.

One thing I don’t have to worry about aside from those issues are loans. Up until now, I’ve only accepted grant and scholarship money. I have NOT accepted loan money. The reason for this is because I’m wary of what will happen once I accept those loans. I will be therefore obligated to pay it back, and that’s something I don’t want to do. I just want to focus on my studies and not worry about money. Sure, I have been the recipient of a fair amount of loan offers from God-knows-where (I honestly don’t want to bother researching about how I got them. I just want to say what I want to say right now.), but it’s not worth it for me to accept them. I can say that without any anxiety because I’m not dependent on that kind of compensation. I’m in a position where I’m able to refuse loans and be fine without it as a result. Just grants and scholarships will do for me.

And for someone like me who is enjoying this luxury, it must be painful to see the rest of the students across the country, not just from my university, who are experiencing the complete opposite of the pros financial aid can bestow on the unfortunate. I may not be precisely correct, but I’m assuming there are students out there figuring out right now how they can pay off debt totaling at approximately $5,000-$100,000. Now then, I’m no big-shot mathematician, but I can safely say these numbers are stupidly big. And if these numbers are big, then that must not be good for poor students like me. Man, some big newspaper should hire me for using great math.

We all know the story about student debt. They are killers. They can destroy your livelihood. It can break your mind. It will follow you around until you die. It is, like time, cruel. It scares me as well. Can you imagine paying back a $10,000 debt immediately after graduating from college? Hell no. I would not like that order, thank you very much. Fortunately for us common folk, there’s a grace period installed before we’re properly charged with the debt, so that’s a plus we can live with. The problem with that, though, is the grace period only last for 6 months, which means you’ll have to work very hard to amass the amount of money you owe in a short time—if you want—so that you won’t have to deal with that debt problem in the future. Some students probably did exactly what I said and got rid of their thorn very quickly. On the other hand, others did not thanks to their own personal issues.

And what happens next to the latter?  If they don’t pay back the loan in a while after the grace period, then the interest rate accompanying it may play a daunting role in ballooning the growth of the said debt. This, in itself, is another problem altogether so I’ll leave that aside. It just gets too annoying for me to elaborate further and I’ll be forced to turn into a financial expert if I do that. Ugh, I’m off-topic.

The point is student debt can get really ugly really quickly and some of them are not capable of dealing with it on their own. They’ll probably fall under the pressure. They will most likely rely on assistance thereafter. And if even that doesn’t work, then they’re screwed. They’ll be forced to attempt to file for a loan forgiveness or cancellation.

That’s not right, though. Students graduating from school shouldn’t worry about paying their debt. They should instead worry about finding a job and be a productive member of society. It’s the ideal situation everyone wants to have, but alas, that’s not the case. Student debt has strained the young Americans of today. It is the result of having no choice but to accept hefty sums of loans for the advancement of our education. Some are lucky to make do with just grants and scholarships, like myself, but others are not.

Although financial aid is largely advertised as a blessing for students, it is, in reality, also a gateway for being entangled and tortured by the chains of debt.

Aftermath

*written at 8:56 P.M. on my notebook with the intention of typing this here later

Strangely enough, I have nothing to offer to you tonight, reader. Hmmm, I wonder why that's the case.

Maybe it's because of the piece I did a couple of days ago. That drained me mentally. I poured everything I had onto that emotionally so I guess it took a toll on my mind. No worries, though. The completion of the passage lifted a tremendous amount of weight off of my shoulders, which was great. I never truly gave my thoughts on anything in an essay form before, so doing it for the first time proved to be a quite a difficult task for me to finish.

*sigh*

Man, that might've been the longest thing I've ever written. It doesn't matter, though, because, in the end, I enjoyed doing it. It sure beats doing mandatory academic research papers, that's for sure.

If you haven't checked it out, please do so.

The One Similarity a Pro Wrestler and a Teacher Both Share

Chris Benoit and Troy Raymond

These are two people I remember from my past. The former was a professional wrestler and the latter was my 6th grade math teacher. They lived completely different lives when compared to each other. But for me, they create wonderful moments that have not left my mind for years. They were both good people in their field of work. Friends and family of the two were known to have been in good terms with them when they were alive.

******

Up until his death, Chris had a family consisted of his loving wife named Nancy, who was a manager for various wrestlers in numerous promotions during the 80s and 90s (who even met Chris while working in the business), and a son named Daniel, who was born in 2000. He had a family and his career was going smoothly. He won a lot—and I do mean a lot—of championships in a plethora of companies such as WWE, WCW, NJPW, ECW, Stampede Wrestling, and much, much more.

In the week before his death, he was scheduled to wrestle at a WWE pay-per-view event named “Vengeance: Night of Champions” against an up-and-coming youngster named C.M. Punk for the ECW Championship. Coincidentally enough, the event was supposed to take place in the city of Houston, Texas, my home town. On the night of June 24th, when the PPV actually happened, Chris no-showed and wasn’t seen anywhere near the Toyota Center.

Chris was always known to be a very physical wrestler. The moves he made in the ring were so stiff his opponents later recollected that they were bordering on the line of being very painful. He was a warrior, but he was reckless at times, too. One of his finishers he always used was the diving headbutt, a move that occurs when you climb up to the top turnbuckle on the corner of the ring, jump off of it, have your arms spread out, and land horizontally on your front side with your head being the first thing to hit your opponent, rendering him “unconscious” under the disguise of kayfabe. Every time after Chris executed the move he would blench around with his arms covering his head as a way to cope with the pain inflicted upon it by the impact of its landing. Repeating this move over and over again eventually took a toll on his head, and as he sustained concussion after concussion for long periods of time, he unknowingly developed dementia which further aggravated his brain.

******

I didn’t know much of anything about Mr. Raymond before I became his homeroom student. He looked very scary thanks to his large intimidating build and height. He had the face of an old veteran who went through serious battles during his military career and didn’t want anyone to talk to him about it and the demeanor of an authoritarian dictator. He looked menacing every time I passed him in the morning on my way to the cafeteria to eat my daily breakfast. I wanted to have no part with him when I was in the 5th grade.

In my next year (6th grade), I was put in a language arts homeroom class with one teacher named Ms. Ramos. Everything was fine and normal a few weeks into the school year until the class was getting filled with new students—transfers, exchange students, all of that jazz. With that happening, it was clear to the administrators of the school that a few kids would have to leave Ms. Ramos’ class to make room for the newbies. You can already see where this was going, reader.

Faced with this predicament, I, being the chivalrous boy that I was, decided to change classrooms for said newbies. I was being polite so I had no choice but to do it. Why would I not do it? C’mon, I was the preeminent good guy. In reality, though, I was forced to change, so any grievance I uttered afterwards were to be heard by deaf ears. In other words, it was pointless for me to say no. And guess whose homeroom class I was put into, reader. That’s right, it was Mr. Raymond’s.

“Shit,” I thought. “I now have to be in his class? God damn it. I didn’t want to be in his class in the first place and now I’m here. Great. Just fucking great.”

These were the kind of thoughts I was thinking the moment I first met him. I was scared to shake his hand when he extended his own upon meeting me. I thought he was going to eat me when he approached me. People of his size weren’t supposed to be in a small intermediate school like where I was currently in. So, when he welcomed me with open arms and a friendly attitude, I was taken aback. It was so surreal I even thought I was being punk’d by Ashton Kutcher, who would then emerge out of nowhere with a mirage of cameras swarming at me to capture my reaction.

A couple of weeks would pass after my first meeting with him and I later realized that he was a cool teacher after all. He cracked jokes with the class. He was friends with everyone. He was a good teacher who made sure all of us students understood whatever lesson he was teaching on any certain day. He later became a good friend of mine, surprisingly enough. Often times he would call me “Planko” in jest as a way of teasing me. I’d get mad as a result and tell him to stop but he never listened to me and my orders. To add insult to injury, he called more stupid names like “Pablo”, “Pancho”, and “Paco”. I hated that. Regardless, he was very good to me that year.

******

The deaths of both these men gave me a great deal of shock when I first heard of them. I mean, I knew it was going to happen eventually, but I didn’t think for a long shot that it would happen way too soon in their lives. They were in their mid-40s when they died. The news came out of nowhere. I couldn’t believe it at first glance. They were gone, both Benoit and Mr. Raymond.

The shock later morphed itself into sadness. The sadness was then converted into questioning. I questioned why it happened on both occasions.

“What happened?”

“Why did it happen?”

“When did it happen?”

“Who did it?”

“Where did it happen?”

It was only then when I watched the news on the television and computer that I later found out what truly happened in both cases.

******

On June 24th, 2007, after not communicating with anyone outside of his household (friends, co-workers, and family) for a few days, Chris Benoit killed his wife and only son in his house by the form of asphyxiation, or strangling. A short while later, he hanged himself and committed suicide.

On the month of August in 2011, Troy Raymond strangled his wife and killed her in their home. He would then “vanish” from the face of the earth after local police discovered her body lying dead in the crime scene. A few hours later, in a hotel in New Orleans, Louisiana, he shot himself in the head and died, committing suicide.

******

My questioning later turned itself into unease in the two times I found out what really happened. I asked myself the kind of questions you would expect to say yourself if you faced this same dilemma as me:

“Why?”

“How could this have happened?”

“WHY!?”

I couldn’t accept it at first, but I eventually came to terms with it. It happened and now they’re dead. I couldn’t do anything to help bring them back so I resigned to that fact of the matter. They really were gone. Such is life. It isn’t fair sometimes.

The more I looked back at their deaths the more it became clear to me. Their deaths were so………

…….alike.

They killed their loved ones and then themselves. They’re a spitting image of each other. It’s still uncomfortable and grim for me to think about even now, even after 10 have passed from the first incident and 6 years have passed from the second.

Their deaths, instead of giving us conclusive answers to their motives and actions, have only opened up more questions, questions in which we have no answer to. The questions I’ve asked myself when digesting the news a long time ago are still being uttered around their lives today. What were their motives? Did anyone notice any irregularities in their behavioral patterns in the days before their deaths? Were they hiding something? Et cetera, et cetera…..

The passing of time has slowly but surely helped us in uncovering just a few answers to the endless stream of questions. When brain analysts examined Chris’ brain to find any abnormalities, they discovered that he possessed the brain of an 85-year old Alzheimer’s patient, which, in broader terms, translates to a bad brain.

According to Troy Raymond’s sister, the couple had “marital issues” a bit before the crime was committed. In fact, it was Troy’s wife who wanted to file for divorce so that she could split up with him in the first place. This, in turn, only opened up even more questions from skeptical people like myself.

If Chris and Troy genuinely had problems with their loved ones, why did they show themselves in public with the appearance of a loving family who yielded to virtually nothing? I didn’t understand. On paper, they were one thing, but from behind the scenes, they were another. That’s what it looked like to me anyway. I still didn’t get it. It didn’t seem right to me. It was idiotic for me to think of them like that. Man, I was very naïve back then.

******

In March of 2004, at WrestleMania XX, after defeating Triple H and Shawn Michaels in the main event for the World Heavyweight Championship, Benoit was embraced by his family to bask in his massive accomplishment. It was a sight for us wrestling fans to witness. Beforehand, he was congratulated by Eddie Guerrero, a longtime friend of his and fellow world champion—WWE Champion to be exact at the time. And when they hugged each other after the final bell had rung, confetti started raining down on the how stage and the wrestlers. It was the absolute peak of Chris’ illustrious career. At long last, his hard work finally materialized to this one great moment of triumph.

In May of 2009, my class was getting ready for a school-wide event named “Sports Day”. It was a day where the students of the entire 6th grade faced off against each other with their classes to see who was the best of the pack. It was organized into various contests. Everyone in my class participated. If I remember correctly, I participated in 3, which was: a 100-meter relay, tug o’ war—where everyone and their momma was eligible--, and a three-legged race. I swear I had so much fun. Outside of these activities, I was allowed to buy candy from stands around the school and eat it in the event. It was all fun. My class was having fun. Mr. Raymond definitely had fun too. To make it better, his wife came to the school to visit us and her husband. She brought some treats for us to eat in-between the activities of the event. They were delicious. That was the only time I saw her when I was in intermediate school, and, according to my intuition, she looked to be in high spirits. You couldn’t sense anything remotely contrary to happiness had you been there at the school, reader.

So then, why?

Why?

Why did you do it, Chris Benoit?

Why did you do it, Mr. Raymond?

Upon further questioning myself, it finally hit me.

They were hiding something. That must be it. That was the conclusion I was able to rationally come up with on my own. There must have been things roaming around in their minds that bothered them to the point where they committed those acts of murder. That could be the missing link to both of these mysteries. Perhaps that can explain why Chris didn’t reveal the extent of his head injuries by the use of his brash wrestling moves like the diving headbutt just for the sake of creating a show for the fans, which caused him to have behavioral problems that ultimately killed his family and self. It can also explain why Mr. Raymond killed himself when the police found his wife’s body and suspected him of being the perpetrator. After the fact, they named him a “person of interest” in regards to the case, further proving the suspiciousness behind his actions.

To know the things they were hiding is another mystery in and of itself, so we’ll never truly know what were their legitimate motives. In Benoit’s case, people have theorized countless of times about how he died. Some say he was killed and somebody else must have killed his family instead, others speculate he sustained unreported concussions which damaged him to the point where he acted aggressively at random moments(the most acceptable for a large crowd), and a few have even concluded in their minds that steroids played a major role in the crime.

For Troy’s case, it is much more simple and direct. His verbal bouts with his wife must have had a clear cause to which they engaged in conflict. However, the clear cause will probably never be revealed by either side of the case out of sheer respect for each other’s privacy, and that’s fine. I don’t want to reignite a forgotten flame, so it’s best for me to not have them reminisce any bad memories.

Whatever the case, their last moments on this Earth ruined their legacies for countless of years to come. Even my memory of them has been permanently affected by this. Superficially, Chris Benoit and Mr. Raymond were good and kind men. They were one of a kind. But if you dig deeper into their lives, they were probably hiding something, and they didn’t want anyone to find out what that thing was. Whatever that thing may be, I simply don’t know. Now, when I think of both of these men, I can’t help but remember their deaths. It’s a thing I CAN’T IGNORE.

I will not ignore.

I will never ignore.

It leaves a bitter taste in my mouth every time I remember. I hate it, but I can’t avoid it.

When Chris Jericho, another close friend and fellow wrestling comrade of Benoit, was asked in a Q&A session on Reddit about the possibility of him entering the WWE Hall of Fame—a sort of legend’s club for wrestlers—he replied:
  • “Never…. But that notwithstanding, you know, putting that aside, it tarnished the rest of life. I mean, you can’t say the name Chris Benoit without, uh, thinking about that. At least I can’t…There’s no way. I mean, how—first of all, how could you go up there and, you know, do a speech for him? How could you put together a video package and completely ignore all that had happened?”

His thoughts echo that of mine. It’s because of their resoundingly similar deaths that I can’t remember them as ever-loving saints from the past anymore.

To conclude, I’d like to write a couple of small letters to the two protagonists of this piece:

To Chris Benoit,

You were a hell of a wrestler. You attained many championships. You were highly regarded as a master of your craft. Everyone loved you. You had a great life. I still don’t completely understand why you did what you did in such an atrocious manner. You should’ve looked after yourself better. Your health was imperative to your well-being. Yeah, being an “old-school warrior” is a good title to have as a wrestler, but was it really worth it? I know this is futile since you’re already gone, but I can’t help saying it regardless. It’s just—you should’ve done more.

To Mr. Raymond,

Killing your wife was not the answer. It just wasn’t. The memories we shared within your classroom were very precious to me. I’m sure they were precious to you too when you were alive. They were, were they? Anyway, I believe I’m the only person as of now who has written about you and your death. Doing this helped put me at ease because I was finally able to break through my indecisiveness about writing this piece and allow my feelings to translate itself onto my notebook and let it speak for itself. In a way, I think of this as something befitting that of closure. I faced head-on the harsh reality that was your death and the details surrounding it. Additionally, your death has given me a learning experience, believe it or not. I learned to never judge a person based on only their looks. You taught me that lesson when we first met and you taught me that again when you pathetically died. So—good bye.

A large black cloud floats atop their names accompanied by the sheer shadow of enigma raining down on them. Thanks to their questionable actions, it will never go away.

Me vs Boredom 4

Staying up late has become the norm for me lately. Frankly, it is second-nature to me now. I've virtually mastered the art of the all-nighter.

Staying up late right now made me think of what it was like to be up late at night years ago as a kid. If the me from 10 years ago could look at the me of right now who's sitting at his desk typing this entry on his computer, he'd slap me hard with jealousy. I wouldn't blame him, since he was under a strict curfew by his parents to sleep by 10:30 P.M., or else he'd be fucked by the belt or the power of mom's hand.

Man, my mom's slaps hurt badly back then. I never want to go through that pain again. I cringe at the possibility of seeing that coming back to haunt me again as a 20-year-old. I'm older, but I will always fear her "chingadazos". She had no remorse when doing it. She was unmerciful, too. To experience it first-hand is to survive an onslaught of torture and cursing yourself for ever getting in trouble.

yeesh

I'm happy my mom doesn't do that sort of thing anymore...........Hooray for staying up late.......

Me vs Boredom 3

I've been thinking about the kind of things I want to write about for this blog. I believe I have some good pieces coming up in the future for you guys to read with interest.

I swear boredom is not going to conquer me in this series. I'm already 2 games down. I will not yield. I will not falter. I will come back and take the lead.

I just thought of something. You know what would be funny? What if I win this game, let Boredom win Game 4, and then win the next 3 consecutive games to take the series... It'll just be like what happened with the 2016 NBA Finals where the then-defending champion Golden State Warriors, accompanied by the 2-time NBA Most Valuable Player award winner Stephen Curry and the best regular season record in history (73-9), blew a 3-1 series lead to the Cleveland Cavaliers, thereby losing the championship in an epic fashion. That would be interesting.

Me vs Boredom 2

*written at approximately noon on July 30th, 2017

I was just outside a couple of minutes ago and let me tell you: it is FUCKING hot. The scorching heat the sun exhibits is terrifyingly painful for me to bear. I was sweating buckets a minute into my venture onto the outside world. As much as I love the summer break from school, I fucking loathe the summer weather.

The heat waves that hit me non-stop are so annoying. It makes me sweat like a fucking pig and I hate that. Sweating makes me dirty and I don't like to get dirty. Whenever I go outside to do an errand, I try my best to finish it as fast as I possibly can so that I can then go back inside and delve into the ice-cold world known as "The Air Conditioner". I love going to that world. It exhumes relief from the harsh hell that is summer (Again I repeat I'm talking about the weather, not the break).

Please come posthaste, winter, Game of Thrones-style.

Me vs Boredom

*written at approximately 8:30 P.M. on July 29th, 2017

I'm in a church.

I'm sitting down on a bench. I'm bored. I don't even know what time it is. It's probably around 8:30 in the night. A nice young lady is talking in front of me whilst standing behind a podium. It seems to me that she's preaching to the congregation about King Nebuchadnezzar and his adventures when he ruled Babylon some thousands of years ago. I've heard of this name before.

He's that guy with the long name who famously ruled over a vast empire in the Middle East--wait a minute. My sister, who's sitting next to me, is beginning to fuck around by sending me an empty envelope. Is she giving me trash? Well then, I'll show her the true meaning of fucking around (don't think wrong, reader). I'll send her a drawing of a man with a large head and a small body.

She replied with her writing "boi" underneath my drawing. That's it? You know what, I'll give her something better than just another ordinary drawing. Boom! Here's a Caveman SpongeBob, bitch! Holla at cha boi!

No reply, huh? That's what I thought. Point goes to me........................................................bitch.

I'm hungry right now. I'm craving a hamburger. I haven't eaten a thing since the morning. Damn my eating habits. This is what I get for regularly pulling all-nighters throughout the summer. I don't regret it though. Relaxation is bliss. Anyone who has the time to relax should use it. The human body eventually tires itself out if it works too hard for an extended period of time.

Man, my mind thinks of so many things when I get bored. Is that a good thing? I think it is. I mean, I've spent all this time contemplating with my thoughts about drawings and food while this lady is talking about something I've paid no honest attention to. What was she talking about, again?

My brain is being active, which is a good thing, right? That is a good thing, right? Right!? RIGHT!!??
